Discord parental controls: Family Center and age checks
By Lewis C. Checked against Discord's help centre and reporting on its age checks on 1 October 2026. We wrote this from the official guide and haven't yet checked every screen on our own device. Spot a menu that doesn't match? Tell us.
Quick answer
Discord is 13+ and built around group chat servers. Link your account through Family Center and you'll see who they've added, messaged and called, which servers they've joined and what they've spent, but not their messages. You can also control friend requests and DMs, set a monthly spending cap and schedule downtime.
How to link
- Your teen opens User Settings, then Account, then Family Center, then My Family.
- They choose Show Code (a QR code) or Copy Link.
- You scan it or open the link. You can do this on the web without the Discord app.
- Your teen accepts your connection request. Up to three parents or guardians can connect.
You only see activity from after you connect.
What you see (last 7 days)
- New friends
- Who they've messaged and called, and total call minutes
- Their top five people and servers
- New servers joined, and servers where they've been active
- Total spent, and gifts received
You also get a weekly summary email, and your teen gets a copy. No message content, ever.
What you control
- Sensitive content: blur or block. Showing it isn't an option for teens.
- Friend requests: from everyone, friends of friends, or server members.
- Server DMs: whether people in shared servers can message them.
- Message requests: on by default for teens, so messages from non-friends go to a separate folder. You need to be confirmed as an adult on Discord to change this.
- Spending cap: a monthly limit (it doesn't cover subscriptions like Nitro).
- Downtime: hours when Discord won't open, like 11pm to 9am.
If your teen reports someone, they can choose to let you know by email. You won't see what they reported.
Discord's new age checks
Discord began rolling out age checks worldwide in late September 2026. It mostly estimates age from account signals like account history and activity. People it can't place can confirm with a credit card or their app store age range. Accounts treated as teens can't open age-restricted servers and channels, and messages from strangers go to the requests folder.
Questions parents ask
What age is Discord for?
13, unless local law sets a higher age. Discord isn't on the UK government's list for the planned under-16 social media ban, which names Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook and X.
Can I read my child's Discord messages?
No. Family Center shows who they've added, messaged and called, which servers they've joined and how much they've spent, over the last 7 days. It never shows message content.
Can strangers message my child on Discord?
Messages from people who aren't their friends go into a separate Message Requests folder for teen accounts. Through Family Center you can also control who can send friend requests and whether server members can message them.
Is Discord checking ages now?
Yes. Discord started a worldwide age check rollout in late September 2026. It mostly estimates age from account signals; people it can't place can confirm with a credit card or their app store age range. Accounts treated as teens can't open age-restricted servers and channels.
