Snapchat parental controls: Family Centre explained

Quick answer

Snapchat is 13+. Teen accounts are private, location sharing is off, and teens can only chat with friends they've accepted or people already in their contacts. Family Centre shows you their friends list, who they're chatting with and how long they spend in the app, but not the messages themselves. The biggest risk is who they accept as a friend.

What Snapchat does by default (13 to 17)

  • Private account. Friend lists are private, and they can only talk to mutually accepted friends or people whose number they've saved.
  • Tagging only works between friends.
  • No public profile for 13 to 15-year-olds. 16 and 17-year-olds can turn one on, but it's off by default.
  • Location off. The Snap Map doesn't share location unless they turn it on, and then only with friends.
  • Snapchat says it keeps public content that some may find inappropriate out of teens' recommendations.

Snapchat says these teen protections can't be turned off. They depend on your child's birthday being real.

Family Centre: what you can see and do

  • Friends: existing and new friends, and how your teen may know them.
  • Chats: who they're chatting with. Not what's said.
  • Time: average time in the app, broken down by feature.
  • Location: request your teen's location, and share yours back.
  • Reports: help them report an account, or report it for them.

How to set it up

  1. Download Snapchat and make your own account.
  2. Add your teen as a friend, and get them to add you back.
  3. Open Family Centre in the app and invite your teen.
  4. Your teen accepts the invite. Talk to them before you send it: it works better as a deal than an ambush.

Questions parents ask

What age do you have to be for Snapchat?

13. The UK plans to ban under-16s from Snapchat from spring 2027, but that still has to go through Parliament.

Can I read my child's Snapchat messages with Family Centre?

No. Family Centre shows who your teen is friends with and who they're chatting with, plus time spent in the app. It doesn't show what they say.

Can strangers see my child's location on Snapchat?

Not by default. Location sharing on the Snap Map is off for everyone, and anyone who turns it on can only share with Snapchat friends, never strangers.

Can strangers message my child on Snapchat?

By default, Snapchatters can only talk to mutually accepted friends or people whose number they already have saved. That's why it matters who they accept as a friend.
