TikTok parental controls: Family Pairing explained

Quick answer

TikTok is 13+. Teen accounts start private, with a 60-minute daily limit and no notifications at night, and under-16s can't send direct messages at all. Family Pairing links your account to theirs, so you can make the time limit stick, block keywords from their feed, and control comments and messages. Their real birthday matters: with a fake one, TikTok treats them as older.

What TikTok does by default (13 to 17)

  • Accounts are private by default.
  • A 60-minute daily screen time limit is on by default.
  • No push notifications at night: from 9pm for 13 to 15-year-olds, 10pm for 16 to 17.
  • "Suggest your account to others" is off. If a teen turns it on, TikTok still won't recommend them to adults.
  • Teens can watch LIVEs but can't host one.
  • Some appearance-changing effects are blocked for under-18s.

Extra rules for 13 to 15-year-olds

  • No direct messages.
  • Their videos can't appear in the For You feed.
  • Comments stay friends-only, even on a public account.
  • Nobody can Duet, Stitch or download their videos.

Family Pairing: what you can set

  1. A screen time limit that sticks. When it runs out, your teen needs a one-time passcode from you to keep going.
  2. Time away. Pick days and times when TikTok won't open, like school nights after 8.
  3. Keyword filters. TikTok hides posts with your chosen words in the description. Worth adding words from our looksmaxxing guide.
  4. Comments. Tighten them or turn them off.
  5. Messages. Choose who can message or send message requests (for 16 and 17-year-olds).
  6. Followers. See who they follow, who follows them, and who they've blocked.
  7. Privacy overview. Check their account visibility and comment settings at a glance.

You set it up from Family Pairing in TikTok, linking your own TikTok account to your teen's.

Stopping TikTok being downloaded

TikTok is rated 13+ on the App Store and listed for teens on Google Play. If your child is younger, the phone's own controls can block it: see our iPhone and iPad and Android guides.

What's coming in 2027

The UK government plans to ban under-16s from TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and X from spring 2027. The rules still have to go through Parliament. What the ban covers.
