What the 759 alerts tell you
Choking is the big one, mentioned in 511 alerts, usually from small parts that snap off. 77% were rated serious or high risk. 75% of the toys were made in China, and 424 named an online marketplace the toy was listed on, with Amazon named in 229.
New in 2026: asbestos in sand toys
Every one of the 39 asbestos alerts in this list came in 2026. Sand-filled squishies, sand art kits and stretchy figures, from several brands and shops, were found with sand that may be contaminated with asbestos. It's the most common reason a toy has been flagged this year (39 of 121). If your child has a sand-filled toy, search for it above. If it's on the list, seal it in a bag and contact the seller.
Toy alerts are up this year: 121 so far in 2026, against 93 by the same date last year.

Before you buy a toy online
- Check for a brand, a UKCA or CE mark and a UK address on the listing and the box. Unbranded toys from third-party sellers fill this list. A missing mark is a red flag, but a mark isn't proof: in 2026 lab tests, most unsafe marketplace toys carried one. What the data shows about buying toys online.
- Magnets and button batteries are the scariest finds. The alerts warn that button batteries a child can get at risk burns and injuries if they end up in a mouth, and that small high-powered magnets can cause blockages inside the body if swallowed. Check the battery compartment is properly secured (usually with a screw), and keep small loose magnets away from young kids.
- Sand toys: 39 alerts were for sand that may contain asbestos. Buy sand toys from shops you trust.
- Bin the plastic bag the toy came in. Packaging bags are behind a lot of the suffocation alerts.
- Search here first. Paste the product name or the Amazon code into the checker before you buy.
If your child's toy is on the list
- Take it away and stop using it.
- Follow the official notice. Each result links to it, usually with a refund route.
- Seller not helping? Contact the Citizens Advice consumer service, which passes reports to Trading Standards.
Questions parents ask
How do I check if a toy has been recalled in the UK?
Type the toy's name, brand, model number or barcode into the checker on this page. It searches all 759 toy safety alerts the UK government has published since January 2021, and links each result to the official GOV.UK notice.
What are the most common dangers in recalled toys?
Choking is the biggest by far: it comes up in 511 of the 759 alerts, usually from small parts that break off. Then come suffocation (mostly packaging bags), magnets that can be swallowed (79), toxic chemicals (125), strangulation (62) and button batteries (44).
Are toys from online marketplaces less safe?
424 of the 759 alerts (56%) name an online marketplace the toy was listed on, and Amazon is named in 229. That doesn't mean every marketplace toy is unsafe, but cheap unbranded toys from third-party sellers turn up in the alerts again and again.
What should I do if my child's toy is on the list?
Take it away and stop using it. Follow the official notice, which usually means returning it for a refund. If the seller won't help, contact the Citizens Advice consumer service, which passes reports on to Trading Standards.
How this checker is built
We pull every alert in the toys category from the official GOV.UK product safety database, read each notice, and sort the dangers into plain-English groups. An alert can mention more than one danger. The chart shows the most serious one. It refreshes automatically, and the full dataset is free to download as JSON.
