Water beads: why they're dangerous for young children
By Lewis C. Based on the UK government's water beads safety alert and GOV.UK product alerts, checked 1 October 2026.
If you think your child has swallowed a water bead
Get medical help straight away. Don't wait for symptoms: they can take hours, or a day or more, to show. Take a sample of the beads if you can, and tell the doctor they're water beads, because they don't show up on X-rays.
What are water beads?
Small, hard beads that soak up water and grow up to 400 times their original size into squishy, jelly-like balls. They're sold for sensory play, crafts, vases and plant pots, under names like jelly balls, water balls, sensory beads and water crystals.
Why they're dangerous
A swallowed bead can keep absorbing fluid and swell inside the gut, where it can cause a blockage that needs surgery. Beads can also cause choking. The government says they've harmed children in the UK and have been linked to deaths overseas.
They're hard to spot. They don't show on an X-ray, and symptoms like vomiting and stomach pain can start hours or even a day after a child swallows one.
What the safety alert says to do
- Keep them away from under-5s.
- Older children should only use them with close adult supervision.
- Store them out of sight and out of reach.
If you've got a younger child in the house, the simplest fix is not to have them at all.

Questions parents ask
Are water beads banned in the UK?
No. The UK issued a national safety alert in September 2024 rather than a ban, and individual products keep getting pulled. In the US, water bead toys that fail new federal safety rules have been illegal to sell since March 2026.
What happens if a child swallows a water bead?
It can keep absorbing fluid and swell inside the gut, which can block it and need surgery. Beads can also cause choking. Get medical help straight away, and take a sample of the beads with you if you can.
Will a water bead show up on an X-ray?
No. The UK safety alert says water beads don't show up on X-rays, which makes them hard for doctors to find. Tell them it's a water bead.
Are water beads OK for older children?
The UK safety alert says keep them away from under-5s and only use them with older children under close adult supervision. Store them out of sight and reach afterwards.
