Quick answer
Match Attax is Topps' football card game, now in its 20th year. The 2026/27 anniversary set adds a six-step rarity ladder. Packets are £2, tins £9.99 to £14.99, and there's a £26.99 countdown calendar from October. It's safe. The things to manage are the spend and the playground swaps.
What is Match Attax?
Football trading cards from Topps that you collect, swap and battle with. Each card has a player and stats, and you play them against your mates' cards. It first landed in UK playgrounds 20 years ago, so there's a fair chance you had them yourself. The 2026/27 set covers the European club competitions, including the Champions League.
What's new this season?
It's the 20th anniversary edition, with a rarity ladder printed on the cards: Rare, Super-Rare, Mega-Rare, Ultra-Rare, Hyper-Rare and full-art "Mystical" cards. That ladder is what gets kids hunting for one more packet.
Is it safe?
Yes. No Match Attax product appears in any of the 758 UK toy safety alerts we track. The things to manage are money and fallings-out. Buying packets to chase a rare card works a bit like a loot box, so agree a budget. And swapping in the playground can end in tears when someone regrets a trade. That's the same reason Pokémon cards were famously banned in plenty of schools.
How much does Match Attax cost?
- Single packet: £2
- Eco pack: £5.99
- Mega multipack: £7.99
- Starter pack: £9.99
- Booster tin: £9.99
- Mega tin: £14.99
- Countdown calendar (from October): £26.99
The countdown calendar is the obvious Christmas buy.
Is it just a phase?
Twenty years in, it's more of a tradition. Interest peaks when a new season's set lands and around Christmas, then settles. It's rising on our radar right now because the anniversary set is new.
