What does aura mean? (And what's aura farming?)

Quick answer

Aura means someone's cool factor or presence. "Aura farming" is doing things on purpose to look cool. It went viral in 2025 thanks to an 11-year-old boat dancer in Indonesia, made Oxford's Word of the Year shortlist, and it's harmless.

What does aura mean?

Aura is someone's cool factor: their presence, their vibe, how much respect they carry. A kid with aura is calm, confident and unbothered. Do something embarrassing and you've lost aura. Teachers ranked it one of the most common words in UK classrooms in 2026.

What's aura farming?

Doing things on purpose to look cool and build up your aura. Oxford University Press shortlisted "aura farming" for its 2025 Word of the Year and defined it as building "an impressive, attractive, or charismatic persona" by acting in a way meant to look confident, cool or mysterious. It lost to "rage bait".

Where did it come from?

"Aura" has been gaming and anime slang for a while, but it went global in summer 2025 thanks to an 11-year-old in Indonesia. Rayyan Arkan Dikha was the dancer on the front of a boat in the Pacu Jalur longboat race, a tradition going back to the 1600s. Clips of him dancing, completely unbothered, on the tip of a speeding boat racked up tens of millions of views. Footballers, Tour de France riders and rappers copied the moves, and "aura farming" stuck.

Is it something to worry about?

No. It's harmless and a bit funny. If anything, it's kids talking about confidence and keeping calm under pressure, which isn't the worst thing to be obsessed with.

Is it just a phase?

It's lasted longer than most. Teachers were hearing it in 2025 and still rank it near the top in 2026, so it's on the radar as steady rather than cooling. Six seven peaked harder and is fading faster.
